It’s Earth Day 2016 Today - Do Something Green To Celebrate Right Now!

The Earth Day Flag

Today is Earth Day! “What on earth is Earth Day?” I hear you cry! Well, it’s when a billion people worldwide do something positive for the planet’s health.

Earth Day happens every year on 22nd April and is intended to highlight the problems caused by climate change across the world. The first Earth Day was held in America and was set up by US senator Gaylord Nelson after he witnessed a devastating oil spill which killed wildlife and ruined a large stretch of coastline in Santa Barbara, California in 1969.

What happens on Earth Day - and where?

20million people took part in the first ever Earth Day, by joining rallies across the United States to raise awareness about environmental issues and to encourage other people across the world to be more environmentally friendly.

Earth Day went global over twenty years ago in 1990 and according to the Earth Day Network, 200 million people in 141 countries now celebrate the day by taking part in festivals, rallies and outdoor events. These are often supported by politicians and high-profile celebs like Leonardo DiCaprio and Emma Watson.

Earth Day Network - doing something for the planet

The Earth Day Network hopes that if everyone does something towards being kinder to the planet, no matter how big or how small, we will eventually halt the destruction of the environment and climate change and reduce pollution and global warming.

What you can do to celebrate Earth Day

You could do something as simple as just increasing the amount of rubbish, clothing and goods you recycle or you could volunteer for a local green project in your neighbourhood. You could make a case for your school to install solar panels on its roof or maybe organise a fundraiser to buy a tree to plant somewhere in your school grounds.
