Not been successful with your 5 UCAS choices - What now?

Not been successful with your 5 choices

So you have applied through UCAS and made your five choices on your application, but haven’t received any offers? What are your options now?

Universities and colleges aim to send their decisions on all applications received in time for the 15 January deadline by 31 March 2013. You should, therefore, have received all the decisions from the universities you have applied to by the latter date (if you are not living outside of the EU, or governed by the art and design or Extra deadlines).

If you should find yourself without an offer, have used all five choices already, and do not want to wait until Clearing, UCAS Extra may be able to offer an additional choice through UCAS. Extra operates from the end of February to early July 2013.

You might be able to apply through UCAS Extra for another course. Extra is way of making a further choice after you applied. You are eligible for Extra if you have used all five choices on your UCAS application and have either been unsuccessful at all of them, or have declined all offers you have received.

To qualify for this, you need to have:

  1. Made your five choices
  2. Received a decision from all of your choices, and
  3. Either had no offers or you have declined all the offers you have received.

Be warned though, if you decline your first five offers and add another through UCAS Extra, you will not be able to accept any of your original choices later. If you decline an offer, the institution will see that and will not hold a place for you if you should change your mind.

You can only apply for one choice through Extra at a time, so please make sure the place is still available before you add it. Once you add an Extra choice it cannot be changed until 21 days have passed.

When you apply to a university or college in Extra, they can view details of choices you made when you originally applied.

You can apply for another choice on Track. If you are eligible for UCAS Extra, a button will appear on your Track screen, which you can use to apply for a course in Extra.

If you don’t get an offer in Extra, don’t worry! You can apply through UCAS’s Clearing process, which gives you another opportunity to apply for vacancies.

It is worth contacting the University’s admission team, who should be able to tell you if the course you want to do is even available at that stage.

Adjustment is the process you can register for if you have met or exceeded the course requirements using UCAS Extra from February to early July. To find out about this process, go to UCAS – What is Adjustment?

Clearing is a service available between July and September, but for most people it is used after the exam results are published in August. It can help people without a university or college place to find suitable vacancies on higher education courses.

If you are flexible and you have reasonable exam results, there is still a good chance you will find another course through Clearing.
